April 10: First Amendment Day. Freedom March kicks off the day at 9 a.m., Ames City Hall, 515 Clark Ave. Keynote speaker: Mark Goodman, Knight professor of scholastic journalism at Kent State University, 8 p.m., Sun Room, Memorial Union. Featured panel will be April 9 at 8 p.m., 1148 Gerdin. Panelists include: Frank Ochberg, professor of psychiatry at Michigan State University and head of Dart; Michael Bugeja, director of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication; Tina Crowley, reporter for the Detroit Free Press; and Donna Alvis-Banks, reporter for the Roanoke (Va.) Times. Moderator: Steve Thomas, editor of the Quad City Times.

April 4-5: SPJ Region VII Conference: Keynote Speaker, Steffen Schmidt, WOI Radio's Dr. Politics; Mark of Excellence Awards. Also speaking are Carolyn Washburn, editor and vice president of the Des Moines Register, and Mike Glover, Des Moines AP. All events will be in the Iowa State Center, Scheman Building, Second Floor.

Jan. 31: Visions of Freedom: A Forum. 7 to 8:30 p.m., The Gallery, Memorial Union. Photographs depicting both personal and historic moments of freedom will be displayed while presenters discuss the impact of those moments and share personal stories of freedom. Speakers include Dean of Students Dione Somerville, associate professor of journalism Barbara Mack, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction Warren Blumenfeld, and LatinosAmericanos members David Ernesto Romero and Claudia Marcela Prado-Meza.
